2. 역사

1879년 셰필드 전 마스터 커틀러(Master Cutler)이자 시장인 마크 퍼스(Mark Firth)에 의해 개교한 최초의 퍼스 칼리지


윌리엄 미치니슨 힉스(William Mitchinson Hicks)는 대학교의 초대 총장이었다.


셰필드 대학교는 1828년 설립된 셰필드 의학교(Sheffield School of Medicine), 1879년 설립된 퍼스 칼리지(Firth College), 1884년 설립된 셰필드 기술학교(Sheffield Technical School)가 1897년 통합되어 셰필드 대학(University College of Sheffield)으로 설립되었다.[252] 1810년대부터 거슬러 올라가는 역사를 가진 셰필드 의학교는 대학교의 가장 오래된 전신이며, 셰필드에서 가장 오래된 고등 교육 기관이다. 1795년 일반 병원(General Infirmary)이 개원하면서 셰필드 최초의 병원이 되었지만, 당시 의학교육은 견습 형태의 교육으로 체계적이지 않았다. 셰필드 의학교육의 아버지로 여겨지는 외과의사이자 약제사였던 홀 오버엔드(Hall Overend)는 1811년부터 의학생들을 교육하기 시작했고,[17] 1828년에 그의 해부학 및 의학교는 외부적으로 인정받았다.[18] 1829년 셰필드 의학 연구소(Sheffield Medical Institution)는 Ars longa vita brevis(예술은 길고, 삶은 짧다)라는 라틴어 모토를 가지고 정식으로 개원했다.[20]

2. 2. 발전 과정

1905년 셰필드 대학교가 처음 개교했을 당시 학생 수는 363명이었고,[32] 그중 114명이 정규 학생이었다.[24] 당시 셰필드 대학교에는 교직원 71명이 있었다.[2] 최초의 기숙사인 스티븐슨 홀과 도서관인 에드거 앨런 도서관이 설립되었다. 제1차 세계 대전 후 복학 군인들이 입학하면서 1919년에는 학생 수가 1,000명으로 잠시 증가했다. 제1차 세계 대전 동안 일부 학과와 강좌는 무기 제조 및 의료 기기 생산 교육으로 대체되었다.[24] 1920년대 이후 셰필드 대학교는 웨스턴 뱅크와 세인트 조지 지역 양쪽으로 확장되었다.[33] 두 차례의 세계 대전 사이에는 정규 학생 수는 약 750명으로 안정되었다.[24]

그 후 1950년대와 1960년대까지 셰필드 대학교는 느리게 성장하다가 급속도로 확장하기 시작했다. 중앙 도서관과 예술 타워를 포함한 많은 신축 건물이 건설되었고, 오래된 주택들이 교육용으로 사용되었다. 학생 수는 현재 2만 6천 명 미만으로 증가했다. 1950년대 동시에 셰필드 대학교는 세인트 조지 지역을 포함한 다른 지역으로도 확장되었다.[33] 1960년대부터 학생회와 세인트 조지 도서관을 포함한 많은 건물이 신축되거나 확장되었다. 1940년대에 제안된 캠퍼스 마스터플랜은 1970년대에 완료되었고, 대학교는 새로운 개발 계획이 필요했다.[35]

3. 캠퍼스

21세기 들어 셰필드 대학교는 어퍼 해노버 거리 동쪽과 서쪽에 제소프 빌딩, 사운드하우스, 제소프 웨스트, 정보 공용 공간, 더 다이아몬드[41] 등의 건물을 신축했다. 또한 아츠 타워, 학생회관, 대학교 본관, 셰필드 바이오인큐베이터, 대학 보건 센터 등은 개보수되었다.[24]

대학 캠퍼스는 빅토리아 양식부터 근대주의 및 현대 건축에 이르기까지 다양한 건물들로 구성되어 있다. 매핀 빌딩과 중앙 건물은 빅토리아 시대 건물이며, 2020년에 건설된 현대적인 곡선 유리 지붕으로 연결되어 있다. 퍼스 코트는 수직 부흥 양식의 적벽돌 에드워드 시대 건물[54]이며, 근대주의 건축물인 알프레드 데니 빌딩과 연결되어 있다. 아트 타워 또한 국제 양식의 전후 근대주의 건축의 한 예이다.[55]

3. 1. 웨스턴 뱅크 캠퍼스

세인트 조지 캠퍼스는 세인트 조지 교회에서 이름을 따왔다. (현재는 강의실과 대학원생 기숙사 등으로 쓰인다)[48][49][50][51][52] 매핑 스트리트 중간에 있으며, 공과대학(부분적으로 등급 II 등록문화재인 서 프레드릭 매핀 빌딩에 위치), 저널리즘학과, 경제학과, 컴퓨터 과학과가 있다.[46] 터너 유리 박물관도 이 캠퍼스에서 운영하고 있다.[46] 최근 제소프 여성병원 건물과 HSE 건물을 인수하여 현대어학과, 역사학과, 영문학과 용으로 개축 중이다.[46]

1986년에 설립된 셰필드 경영대학(Sheffield University Management School)은 AMBA, AACSB 및 EQUIS 공인 비즈니스 스쿨이다. 트리플 인증을 받은 세계 60개 비즈니스 스쿨 가운데 한 곳이다.

셰필드 대학교는 다양한 학문 분야에서 국제적으로 인정받는 연구를 수행하고 있다. 한스 아돌프 크렙스는 1935년 약리학 강사로 부임하여 1937년 시트르산 회로(크렙스 회로)를 발견,[36][37] 1953년 노벨 생리학·의학상을 수상했다. 1938년에는 생화학과(현 분자생물학 및 생명공학과)가 설립되었고 크렙스는 초대 학과장이 되었다. 조지 포터는 1955년 물리화학 교수로 부임하여 플래시 광분해 연구를 발전시켰으며, 1963년 화학과장이 되었다.[38]

자연과학부는 동물 및 식물 과학과, 생의학 과학과, 화학과, 수학 및 통계학과, 분자생물학 및 생명공학과, 물리 및 천문학과, 심리학과의 7개 학과로 구성되어 있으며, 6명의 노벨상 수상자를 배출했다.[2]

동물 및 식물 과학과는 영국에서 가장 큰 전체 유기체 생물학 연구 전담 학과 중 하나이다.[91] 1884년 서스 칼리지에서 생물학 교육이 시작되었고, 1888년 알프레드 데니가 최초의 생물학 교수로 임명되었다. 1896년에는 식물학자 버트램 H. 벤트리가 합류했다.[92] 1908년 대학 설립 직후 동물학과와 식물학과가 분리되었다가,[93] 1988년 동물 및 식물 과학과로 통합되었다. 초대 학과장은 데이비드 H. 루이스였다.[2] 이 학과는 1999년 고등교육 질 보증 기관(QAA) 평가에서 24점 만점을 받았으며, 2014년 연구 우수성 프레임워크(REF)에서 생물 과학 연구 부문 상위 5위에 올랐다.[94][95]

셰필드 대학교에는 4개의 플래그십 연구소가 있다.[181] 2019년에 설립된 이 연구소들은 청정 에너지 생산, 지속 가능한 식량, 건강 증진 및 삶의 질 향상에 중점을 두고 있다.[182]

5. 2. 산학 협력

셰필드 대학교는 보잉(Boeing), 롤스로이스(Rolls-Royce plc), 지멘스(Siemens), 유니레버(Unilever), 부츠(Alliance Boots), 아스트라제네카(AstraZeneca), GSK(GlaxoSmithKline) 등 세계적인 기업들과 긴밀한 협력 관계를 맺고 있다.[187] 첨단 제조 연구 센터(Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, AMRC)는 셰필드 대학교와 100개 이상의 기업들이 함께 연구하는 곳으로, 첨단 제조 단지(Advanced Manufacturing Park)에 있다.[188] 셰필드 대학교는 셰필드 바이오인큐베이터(Sheffield Bioincubator)와 크로토 혁신센터(Kroto Innovation Centre)를 통해 지역 중소기업(small and medium enterprises)과도 협력하고 있다.[189][190]

2021년, 대학 경영진은 고고학과 폐쇄를 결정하여 국내외적으로 큰 반발을 샀다.

6. 1. 무기 거래 연루

셰필드 대학교의 첨단 제조 연구 센터(Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre)는 BAE 시스템즈(BAE Systems)와 같은 방산업체로부터 자금 지원을 받아 다양한 연구 프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 2008년, 셰필드 대학교는 BAE 시스템즈와 협력하여 능동 제어 연구 센터(Centre for Research in Active Control)를 설립하고, BAE 시스템즈 잠수함의 스텔스 성능 개선을 목표로 연구를 진행했다.[198]

2012년, 셰필드 대학교 학생회는 대학교의 모든 무기 거래 관련 연계를 중단시키는 것에 찬성 투표를 했다.[199] 2022년 10월, 학생들은 셰필드 대학교와 롤스로이스와의 연계 및 무기 제조 참여 의혹에 항의하며 '더 다이아몬드' 건물을 점거했다.[200] 이로 인해 건물이 폐쇄되었고, 점거자들은 코엔 람버츠(Koen Lamberts) 총장과의 협상이 시작될 때까지 건물에서 나가지 않겠다고 밝혔다. 지난 8년 동안 셰필드 대학교는 롤스로이스로부터 약 4700만파운드를 지원받았다.[201]

2022년 11월, 셰필드 대학교는 시위와 관련된 "혐의 행위"에 대해 두 명의 학생을 조사하기 위해 사설 조사관을 고용했다.[202][203] 2023년 11월, 학생들은 팔레스타인을 지지하고 대학교의 무기 제조업체(BAE 시스템즈, GKN, 보잉(Boeing))와의 재정적 계약에 항의하며 대학교의 최신 건물 개관식을 방해했다.[204]
